Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
January 14, 2007
There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine." -

In today’s second reading, St. Paul tells the Corinthians (and us) that all of our gifts are from God and that they are given, not for us alone, but for the common good. But the generosity of God knows no limits–the miracle at Cana reminds us that whenever we faithfully do as God asks, He can change our gifts of water into wine!
The Month of November
Each year, the Church reminds us of our Hope with the Festival of All Saints. The next day, we are asked to recall our deceased family members and friends with the commemoration of All Souls. Drawing from tradition, the teaching of the Church, and our love for family and friends, we pray for them in a special way for the month. Life, as we know from our common experience, is short. The mystery of death, while not the most common subject at gatherings, enters into the circle of our family and friends. The blessing of our Faith is what enables us to deal with the sting of death and pain. Because we are rooted in the Lord Jesus, we turn to Him with confident hope and renew within ourselves the proper dispositions necessary to respond faithfully to the gift of life. It is a good month to recall our loved ones, to share the story of their lives, the anecdotes that bring a smile, to prayerfully say, “I love you.” May those who have preceded us attain the mercy of God and in time be counted in the Communion of Saints.

2007 Archbishop's Appeal
|
|
What is the Archbishop’s Appeal? The Archdiocese of Washington, like most dioceses, conducts an appeal once a year to support the mission and ministry of the Archdiocese. The parishioners of our parishes and missions are asked to make a financial commitment to this important cause.
Why should people give to the Archbishop’s Appeal? The Archbishop’s Appeal provides an opportunity to share our financial gifts in order to help provide education, ministry and services throughout the Archdiocese. Since we are not a congregational church, all parishioners are asked to support the central structure of our local Church. Every time that we say the Creed we reaffirm the fact that we are members of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.” We are saying that every parishioner is a part not only of his or her parish but also of the Universal Church. Each of us is responsible for the well being of the Church in our parish, throughout the Archdiocese and throughout the world. Since we are one community of believers, members of all parish communities throughout the Archdiocese of Washington are asked to give to the Archbishop’s Appeal.
What ministries are supported by my contributions? Education (tuition assistance for Catholic school students, assistance to inner city schools, formation of parish religious educators and support for parish Religious Education Programs).
Chaplaincies (support for university campus ministries, hospital chaplains and the Washington, D.C. jail chaplain).
Special Ministries (Catholic Deaf Center, Social Justice Ministry, Office of Ministry to Black Catholics, Office of Ministry to Hispanic Catholics and Young Adult Ministry).
Family Life and Pro-Life (financial support of Family Life Ministry, Birthing and Care, Natural Family Planning, Pregnancy Aid Centers and Pro Life Activities).
Leadership Formation (assistance for the Lay Leadership Institute, and other leadership development and outreach efforts).
Vocations and Clergy (funding of education of seminarians, Redemptoris Mater Seminary, St. John Vianney House, Priests’ Retirement Home, care of sick and retired priests and post ordination education. Catholic Community Services (support for Catholic Charities and Spanish Catholic Ministry).
