TROOPS OVERSEAS:
Oh God, kindly watch over those exposed to the dangers of military life. Give them such strong faith that nothing may ever lead them to deny it or fear to practice it. Fortify them by your grace against the contagion of bad example, so that, preserved from vice and serving you faithfully, they may be ready to meet death if it should come.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, inspire them with sorrow for sin and grant them pardon. Mary, our Mother, be with them in battle, and should they be called upon to make the supreme sacrifice, obtain for them the grace to die in the love of your divine Son. St. Joseph, pray for them. Amen.
From Prayers for Today, originally complied by Terence Cardinal Cooke.

The U.S. bishop’s pastoral on stewardship reinforces today’s reading from Corinthians: “Because its individual members do collectively make up the Body of Christ, that body’s health and well-being are the responsibility of the members—the personal responsibility of each one of us. We all are stewards of the Church.”

2007 Archbishop’s Appeal Begins
A letter from Archbishop Wuerl announcing the 2007 Archbishop’s appeal will be sent to many of you. If you receive this mailing, please review it carefully. The programs, services and ministries supported by this Appeal require financial support from each of us in order to continue to meet the challenges of our diverse and growing communities.
This year’s theme is: “Your Reward shall be Great in Heaven” -Luke 6:23
As you reflect on this theme, consider that Christ is calling us to live our lives in ways that will assure that we will attain our heavenly reward. From the way that we conduct ourselves at home, at work or in social situations, to the ways in which we recognize that all that we are and all that we have is given to us by our Maker, we are instructed to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
If you receive the mailing from Archbishop Wuerl, please take a moment to recognize how God has blessed you and, then, make a generous pledge out of gratitude for those gifts He has given you. Thank you!

GLASS OF MILK
One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water.
She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?"
"You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness."
He said: "Then I thank you from my heart." As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.
Years later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room.
Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to the case.
After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested that the business office pass the final bill to him for approval.
He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill.
She read these words.....
"Paid in full with one glass of milk."
(Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly
Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed:
"Thank You, God, that Your love has spread abroad through human hearts and hands."
