There
is a certain urgency in today’s Gospel as Jesus calls His first
disciples—Andrew and Simon, James and John. Each one follows Jesus
immediately, unhesitatingly abandoning nets and boats and father and
fellow-workers. To what is Jesus calling me—at this moment, in these
circumstances? What will I need to abandon in order to follow Him?
Another
March
Once again, we will witness the movement of life in our capital
city. With strength drawn from the author of life, Almighty God, the cry
will once again be uttered for all to hear—“Life is a gift from God!”
Many will wonder why they involve themselves year after year in a March
for Life in Washington when the law of the land has not changed. Yet,
witnessing to the value and culture of life is a constituent part of our
faith. Our late Pope John Paul II, in September 1979 on the Mall of our
capital city, uttered the famous phrase that when God gives life it is
forever. In his writing about love and responsibility, our Holy Father
clearly reminded us that the power of our sexuality is a participation
in the Mystery of God’s love for us and the challenge for us to love
God. This simple and basic truth may at times seem to fall on deaf ears,
but it must be proclaimed in and out of season.
