Like St. Paul in the second reading, the good steward can say, “I do all that I do for the sake of the Gospel in the hope of having a share in its blessings.”

This month has been filled with many events both at home and abroad. The overwhelming news stories have had to do with the mystery of human life (the miners in West Virginia, the death of musicians, the health conditions of notable world leaders, and the plight of refugees.) We at St. Mary’s have tried once again to reflect on life issues. The subject matter is vast and cannot be crammed into the 31 days of the month. However, the general areas of personal review can once again be looked at with increased information. The March for Life which we witnessed and perhaps participated in has made it clear that it is not so much laws that have to be changed but the human heart. The challenge of recognizing the unique gift that life is for each and every one of us, the growth in personal awareness that God has a specific plan for each of us, the potential threats to our individual lives if we remain uninformed; the list of reflections continues. We have gathered to pray and bear witness once again to the ancient message of the Church “all life is a gift from God.” May Mary who said, “Yes” to Life intercede for us and our country.

RIGHT TO LIFE
January 2006

Legislation Promoting Embryonic Stem Cell Research (Oppose): Delegate Samuel Rosenberg and Senator Paula Hollinger are sponsoring legislation to promote embryonic stem cell research. (The bill title won’t be known until early February.) The bill seeks to use state money to fund the destruction of human embryos so that their cells can be used in science experiments. The Church condemns the destruction of innocent early human life; legislation endorsing the killing of human embryos must be opposed.

Legislation Promoting Parental Notification Before a Minor’s Abortion (Support): Parents have the right to be involved in the health care decisions of their minor children, and a minor girl seeking an abortion needs the guidance and support of her parents. The proposed legislation would modify Maryland’s law so that at least one parent will be notified before a minor’s abortion. An exception would be allowed in cases where a girl fears parental abuse, in which case a judge would authorize bypass of parental notification.

Please contact your Maryland State Senator and all of your Maryland Delegates; urge them to oppose legislation funding embryonic stem cell research and to support legislation promoting parental notification before a minor’s abortion.
