Lent 2005
Wednesday will once again remind us that we are dust and unto dust we will return. How lovely! This sobering reminder is meant to keep all of us on the balance beam of honest concerns for this life and the next. The season is meant to help all of us renew and solidify our relationship with the Lord Jesus, so recently acclaimed by all of us as the Savior. Lent is a discipline to practice more fervently the 3 pillars of our Faith: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Each day in Lent, the parish is doing its part to create opportunities for public and private prayer. The additional Masses and devotions are made available to you for that purpose. The notion of personal mortification and penance (which in all candor has been greatly diminished in the day-to-day of most of us) is meant to help strengthen us to be attuned to the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Doing without meat on Friday or cutting back on our daily intake of food and drink need not be a hardship, rather a chance to grow closer to God. The giving of alms for us is translated into works of mercy or charity; such as, setting aside of funds for those in need in the Sudan, for the victims of the Tsunami, and for the poor in our own community. We all have the gift of another Lent. Will we waste it?

The Gospel today reminds us that our lives and our deeds must serve as examples to others, pointing the way to the Father. Not for our own benefit do we labor, but so that others may see our good works and give glory to our Father in heaven.
