Lent 2005

Last week, I reminded us all that we have the gift of another Lent. I asked whether we will waste it. The daily and weekly schedule is an attempt on the part of our parish to assist you in the ‘Journey of Faith’ and to enter the city of Jerusalem with Jesus and not find ourselves abandoning Him, denying Him or rejecting Him. Each Mass, offered in this special time, is meant to awaken a deeper understanding of discipleship. It strengthens us in a sincere response to the Lord’s love for us. The series of talks on Thursday evening by our deacon is to shed some light on the figure of Saint Peter in his struggle to acknowledge the reality of Jesus. Our uniting on Friday evenings for a soup supper is not only an act of personal mortification and penance but meant to remind us of those who are starving in the world, and that we should make a small donation to ease their hardship. The Stations of the Cross with Benediction, following the supper, help us enter into the Passion of Christ. Our personal reflections, readings and meditations, and use of other materials are all aids to enter into a more dynamic personal relationship with our Savior. We are challenged to draw closer to the Lord and to allow the power of God’s grace to take deeper root in us. All we can do as a parish is to offer the possible avenues and have multiple rest stops along the journey. It is up to each one of us to decide whether we will accept the invitation to journey or not!

In the first reading, Isaiah urges us in the name of the Lord to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and clothe the naked. If we do so, he assures us, the Lord will hear and answer our cries for help in time of need.
