First Communion
For most of us the occasion of First Communion in the life of a parish is a day of great joy and excitement. The Church rejoices in the gathering of families celebrating the innocent love of God in the lives of their children. Our children approach the central Mystery of our faith with reverence and wonder. For years they have watched the adults in the local Church rise and partake of the Bread of Life. Over the years, it may have been the voice of one of these littles ones saying, “I want one,
too.” The Lord reminds us that He wants the little children to come to Him and for us not to hinder them from coming. My prayer for our little ones is simple—I pray that this will be the first of many communions throughout their lives. My experience over the years has at times sadly been that some of our children make their first and last communion on the same day. May God strengthen the parents of our first communicants to grow ever more faithful in being not only the first teachers of their children in the Faith but the very best of
teachers.†
