Another Mother’s Day?
Each year, our culture pauses and makes an effort to demonstrate
in some fashion an appreciation for our mothers. We are reminded
by advertisements of various kinds to do something for our mother.
So, it has become the busiest day in the restaurant business; the
floral industry is eager to join in the celebration, as well as
the card companies, and confection makers of all sorts. Many gifts
are purchased and given. At the end of the day, once the hubbub
has concluded – there’s mother with a few moments to reflect on
the many good wishes and acts of gratitude manifested that day.
After the last telephone call, she has the opportunity to thank
God for the blessing of her family. Yet, as she prepares to retire
for the night, her prayer invariably changes from one of gratitude
to petition. Once again, she asks God’s help with this child or
grandchild, this member of the family or this neighbor. Her heart
opens up to God with unselfish concern for the well-being of her
own and others. She may gaze at an image of Mary, the mother of
mothers, and speak to her as only another mother can about family.
For our part, as children, I’m reminded of an orphan boy of 12 who
having lost his mother and having been separated from his brothers
and sisters, faced a very different Mother’s Day for the first
time. He, along with other classmates, had made a spiritual
bouquet card for his mother. Yet, he was living in a foster home.
He arose that Sunday, went to the cemetery where, but a few months
before, he had gathered with a complete family and laid his mother
to rest. He stood in the chill of the morning over her grave and
could only cry and call out to her and God. Then, looking at the
card he had made and the prayers he had promised to say, found
comfort that Our Holy Mother Mary was speaking with his mother. He
remembered how his mother had taught him to love Mary, even though
he could not see her. His mother had showed him how Mary was also
her mother and would always be ready to tell Jesus her Son about
life in their family.
We children need to be comforted by the faith of this orphan and
take time to thank God for our mother. We should pray for her
every day and never take her for granted. We should never hesitate
to thank her for all she does for us. We should always be ready
and willing to help her if we can. We should speak and behave in a
manner that would never offend or embarrass her. Oh, how precious
is the gift of one’s mother. She may not be perfect nor are we.
She may have flaws but so do we. She may at times drive us crazy
and we also drive others crazy. Yet, she is the special person God
asked to say “Yes” to life and her yes is you and me. May God
bless our mothers and may we give thanks to Him for their “Yes”.
May Mary, the mother of mothers, continue to support and intercede
for them before the Lord and may we all be comforted that a
mother’s love is not just here while we journey on earth but a
blessing to be shared completely one day in heaven.

My Mom
I love her,
who wouldn’t love her.
She’s my mother,
my mom.
That sweet somebody,
thinks I’m somebody.
She’s my everybody,
my mom.
When I’m far away,
she’s my only inspiration.
And when I am blue,
she’s my only consolation.
As the years roll on her, I gaze upon her -
she’s my Madonna,
MY MOM.
