Altar
Flowers in Our Lady’s Chapel next weekend are given in loving memory of
Allen Harris by Beverly Carroll.
Each year, our parish celebrates this third of the Initiation
Rites. Yet, I am left to wonder how many of us, who have received this
Sacrament, really make use of the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit.
Our culture which embraces noise and distraction seems to oppose our
being able to really make use of this special help from God. It is
like so many of us who at Christmas receive an avalanche of gifts and
a few weeks later can’t recall all that we received. Yet, those things
may be in our closets, dressers, shelves, bookcases and the like. Only
periodically, when we either look specifically for the gift, do we
recall having it. So it is with the gifts and fruits of the Spirit.
Many of us have forgotten that we have them forever and that they are
meant to be used each day of our lives. Consider what a difference it
would make if you were to invoke the Holy Spirit into the daily
routine. St. Paul reminds us that it is only with the spirit that we
can acknowledge God as Father and proclaim to the glory of the Father
that Jesus is Lord. If this is true, how then could I allow myself to
be distracted from responding to the presence of God in my life? Let
us renew with the help of this year’s Confirmati our response to the
power of the Holy Spirit.
Thanks to the Cub Scouts and their leaders who helped beautify the
front of Our Lady’s Chapel. Also, many thanks to Mrs. Maria Miller and
her son who tend the garden year round.
In
the second reading today, St. Paul reminds the Corinthians, “There are
different gifts, but the same Spirit; there are different ministries
but the same Lord.” How am I using my gifts “for the common good”?
Do miracles happen in your child’s school? They do at St. Mary’s!
