  Another Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is a holiday rooted in the South in what was originally called Decoration Day. Gradually, the custom of decorating graves of fallen soldiers from the Civil War included others who served in successive conflicts and wars of our country. It has become the nation’s witness to the sacrifice made so many in our history. As time has passed, this day has taken upon itself other meanings: it is time to anticipate the summer; it is an opportunity to have a great cookout with family and friends or to take advantage of sales. My thoughts are brought back to many of my visits to Arlington National Cemetery and wandering through the graves and reading the names of those who were lovingly committed to the earth. The day is to help us give thanks to God for the sacrifice made by many men and women in the history of our nation. Though many of us will be unable to attend Mass – we should find some time to commend them to the Lord’s mercy. In a special way, we might also remember the families of the deceased service men and women. Another possible avenue for us is to pray for our troops and for those who serve them at our meals. Yes, another Memorial Day has come. Hopefully, the reason the nation set it aside in the calendar will not be forgotten.
