The Feast
of the
Transfiguration
August 6, 2006 |
After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And He was transfigured before them, and His clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them.

Sixty
Years of Marriage
I will have the privilege of celebrating the anniversary Mass for Uncle Lawrence and Aunt Agnes this August 12th. The celebration will be held in Elliot Lake, Ontario at Our Lady of Fatima parish. Their six children have put out the call to both sides of the family to gather for the celebration. What we will give thanks to God for is not so much the 60 year time-span, but more importantly the yeses made to God in the span of sixty years. Their cooperation with the Grace of God has given to their immediate and extended families and friends many gifts: an appreciation for life, an identity flowing from love of family, a faith, hope and love tried in the tug and pull of life. It is a blessing for me personally to gather with family for such an occasion, rather than for the expected loss of family members. May the Lord continue to bless Uncle Lawrence and Aunt Agnes. †

NEW PARISHIONERS
A BIG welcome to Mr. & Mrs. Rolando Santos, Mrs. Grace A. Horner, and Ms. Marie Claire Viaao as new parishioners of St. Mary’s Church.
|
|

The crowd in today’s Gospel demanded a sign of Jesus and wanted to know what “work” He did to inspire their faith. May our faithful stewardship be a sign to others that we, like the Ephesians in the second reading, have laid aside our former way of life and acquired a “fresh, spiritual way of thinking” in Christ. |

SAINT OF THE WEEK: St. Dominic
Dominic, with six followers, founded an order devoted to the conversion of the
Albigensians. The order was canonically approved by the bishop of Toulouse but failed to gain approval at the fourth General Council of the Lateran in 1215. Pope Honorius III gave his approval in 1216 and the Order of the Preachers (the Dominicans) was founded. The new order was phenomenally successful in conversion work as it applied Dominic’s concept of harmonizing the intellectual life with popular needs. He died on August 6, 1221 and was canonized on August 8, 1234.
