19th Sunday
in Ordinary Time August 7, 2005
But when he saw how (strong) the wind was he became frightened;
and, beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus
stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little
faith, why did you doubt?"

Sixty years ago,
Nagasaki and Hiroshima were incorporated into our common parlance with
the dropping of the Atomic bomb. The Nuclear Age was born. Twenty-seven
years ago, Pope Paul VI died and thus began the year of the three popes.
August 2005 finds us with a new pope once again and the continuing
atomic age. History does provide all of us with moments and events that
impact our lives. The dropping of the bombs in Japan brought about the
end of World War II and ushered in a dangerous balance of power. The
death of Pope Paul VI and the sudden unexpected death of Pope John Paul
I led us to the papacy of John Paul II, now known as the Great. This
August will see the gathering of 800,000 young people in Cologne,
Germany for World Youth Day 2005. Pope Benedict XVI will challenge them
to be the hope of the Church and the world.
Yes, August of every year seems to be a month when many events take
place and impact our lives. The one constant is that Jesus is Lord and
we are called to a deep friendship with Him.

Elijah recognized the voice of God not in the strong and heavy wind, not
in the earthquake, and not in the fire, but in a tiny whispering sound.
May we find enough quiet in our clamorous world to hear His voice and
discern what He is calling us to do and be.
