Labor Day

It is hard for many of us to remember the workers’ struggle during the Industrial Age. Today with voluntary employment and the amazing number of hours spent working by most of our citizens, the history associated with this holiday is mostly forgotten. Because of our Catholic heritage, we see dignity in our labor and respond to our talents flowing from the goodness of God. Thus, many of us introduce ourselves by revealing our occupation or profession to perfect strangers. This behavior can lead to a mindset of reducing work to a utilitarian perspective. This Labor Day gives us the opportunity not only to get together with family and friends but also to thank God for His gifts to us. We should be grateful that we live in a country that enables us to develop these talents and to work for the common good.  †
Father Gary Villanueva will be celebrating Mass at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 1st. Those participating in this special Mass are reminded that First Saturday is celebrated at the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Adoration will be held one hour prior to Mass.

MUSIC MINISTRY

Music Director: Dr. Mickey Terry
(202)581-6304

Want to join St. Mary’s Contemporary or Traditional Choir? Please call Dr. Mickey Terry  if you are interested in joining. Come and share your talents while worshiping Him!

In today’s first reading, Joshua challenges the people to decide whom they will serve. Recalling God’s faithfulness to them and to their ancestors, the people declare, “We also will serve the Lord, for He is our God.” May we, too, be mindful of God’s gifts to us and renew our commitment to serve Him with grateful hearts.
