The Blessing of Family:

I will be traveling with my father in Northern Ontario. Accompanying us will be my sister, Patricia. This journey to the North will enable my father to have a family get-together with his remaining brothers and sisters and some of the in-laws. In Englehart, we will see Aunt Maureen, then on to Kirkland Lake to see Uncle Conn and Aunt Shirley. From there we proceed to Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, to visit with Aunt Rita. Turning and heading east, we will make our way to Elliot Lake and see Aunt Mary and Uncle Ed. Then, we are off to Bruce Mines and Echo Bay to see Uncle Lawrence, Aunt Agnes and Aunt Teresa. I’ve not included the many cousins that still live in the Northland of Ontario and Quebec. From the litany I shared with you, you can see that my father is still very blessed at 84 to have many of his family to visit and reminisce with about this year. Thank you Lord for enabling me to share this time with my dad.

In today’s second reading, St. Paul exhorts the Romans to total stewardship. Brothers and sisters, he urges, “…offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.”

MUSIC MINISTRY

Music has always been a special part of my life. When I was 7 years old, I learned rhythm and counting by 3’s and 8’s in tap dancing school. My interest in music continued into college, where I became president of the Mt. Agnes College Choir and taught liturgical dancing.

I’ve always sung at St. Mary’s from the age of 5 years old and Father Repetti led us in “O Salutaris” and “Tantum Ergo” at Stations of the Cross. I loved the folk group in the 1980’s and also the traditional choirs in the 1990’s. I could write a book about all of our choir directors—some much more emotional than others—who waved their arms with gusto to help us “feel” the music, instructed us to walk to the rhythm of the music while singing so we could “hear” the beat, and did vocal exercises with us in an effort to help us enunciate.

I think I will always sing at St. Mary’s. Won’t you join us? You really don’t have to have formal musical training; most of us don’t. We come because we enjoy each other and our talented director, Dr. Terry. He makes rehearsals fun and energizing, even after a hard day’s work!
