My Father’s House is a House of Prayer

In the scriptures we are reminded by Jesus that His Father’s house is a house of prayer. We should do all we can to foster this notion while in the main body of the church out of respect for our fellow parishioners prior to and after the celebration of the Mass. A reverential silence should be our common goal. This will enable those who wish to properly prepare and thank God to do so in the quiet so conducive to prayer.

September 2006

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I write to invite a generous response to the special collection for the Pastoral Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa.

The Church in Africa is the fastest growing part of the Universal Church and, at the same time, the neediest part of our family of faith. It is spiritually rich, but desperately poor and the Church on that vast continent needs our support to meet both its current needs and to realize its enormous potential.

In the past 25 years, the number of Catholics in Africa has increased from 55 million to 144 million and the number of priests, by 73 percent. Over 70 percent of Africans live on less than $2 per day and this poverty cripples the ability of the local Church to raise sufficient funds for pastoral needs from the faithful. Our financial contributions help support pastoral outreach, catechetical programs, Catholic schools, programs of evangelization, education of seminarians and the continuing education of the clergy.

The Pastoral Solidarity Fund focuses on building the pastoral capacity of the Church in Africa and on strengthening the bonds of faith that tie the Church in the United States to it. It does not duplicate the humanitarian or development assistance provided by Catholic Relief Services.

I pray that you will respond generously to the collection for the Pastoral Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa on the weekend of September 23-24, 2006. Thank you for your kind consideration of the urgent needs and the great promise of the Church in Africa.

Faithfully in Christ,

Most Reverend Kevin J. Farrell
Auxiliary Bishop of Washington
