St. Mary’s School of Piscataway, located on the banks of the historic Piscataway Creek in Clinton, Maryland has been serving students and families of the Piscataway Valley and surrounding area since 1962. The school is an integral part of the parish community and operates under the direction of the Archdiocese of Washington, DC.

Our Philosophy

The Goal of Catholic education is to foster the development of the whole child as a person in a Christ-centered environment. St. Mary’s School of Piscataway recognizes five dimensions of the whole person: spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical. Recognizing the parent as the primary educator of the child, this educational community promotes a spirit of caring, joy and cooperation among those involved with the education of the child.

Our Past

St. Mary’s (the Piscataway Church, as it was referred to in early historic records) was originally founded as a missionary parish to the Piscataway Indians. It began when Father Andrew White, S. J. baptized Chitomachen, the Emperor of the Piscataway's, his family and members of the tribe on July 5, 1640. The Church continued to grow and minister to the needs of the parishioners by providing Sunday and weekday Masses and religious education throughout the colonial period, the Civil War era, both World Wars and into the present millennium. As the needs of the community changed, so did St. Mary’s. The middle part of the 20th century brought expansion to many Archdiocesan parishes. Permission was granted for the construction of a school and convent at St. Mary’s of Piscataway. The school building was completed in 1962 and initially served students in grades one through three. Over the years, grades 4 through 8 were added as well as building additions for a Parish Hall, a library and a science lab. Most recently a classroom was converted to a computer technology lab to enhance instruction. The school has been staffed by religious orders including the Sisters of St. Dominic from Sinsinawa, WI from 1962 through 1976 and the Sister of Mercy from 1976 through the 1980’s, as well as lay men and women throughout the years.
